Israel’s top diamond exporter is Leo Schachter

Ramat Gan--For the second year in a row, Leo Schachter Diamonds exported more polished diamonds from Israel than any other company, year-end figures released Thursday by the diamond controller’s office show.

In 2012, the company shipped out $317 million worth of polished goods, topping second-place exporter M.I.D. House of Diamonds by $79 million. M.I.D.’s 2012 exports totaled $238 million.

In third place was A.A. Rachminov Diamonds with $180 million, followed by Safdico (Israel) Ltd. with $154 million and Niru Diamonds Israel with $120 million in net exports.

While the top three remain unchanged from last year, Safdico, the diamond cutting and polishing company in which billionaire diamantaire Laurence Graff has a stake, and Niru Diamonds Israel are new to the top five, edging out E.Z. Diamonds Ltd., which slipped to No. 6, and Yoshfe Diamonds International, now No. 9.

Rounding out the top 10 are E.Z Diamonds’ $95 million in exports; Ofer Mizrahi Diamonds Ltd. with $92 million; Andre Messika Ltd. with $87 million; Yoshfe with $84 million; and Poligem with $81 million in net exports.

After spending a decade at the top, L.L.D Diamonds Ltd., the company owned by billionaire Lev Leviev, was not on the list for the second year in a row. The list excludes companies that request their export figures not be made public.

Total net exports of Israel’s top 25 reached $2.15 billion, or about 38 percent of the country’s polished export total of $5.7 billion.

The diamond controller’s office, part of Israel’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor, publish a list of the country’s 25 largest polished diamond exporters every year. Twelve of those companies that qualify for the list asked that their export figures not be published; the next-largest exporters took their place on the list.

Including these 12, Israel’s 37 largest polished diamond exporters shipped out $3.03 billion in stones in 2012, slightly more than half of Israel’s net polished exports for the year.
