GIA plans to open grading lab in Japan

Dec 23, 2011

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced that plans are underway to establish a laboratory in Japan for 2012.

“We are excited to develop a presence in Japan,” Donna Baker, president and CEO of the GIA, said. “Japan, along with India and China, are the world’s leading diamond markets, behind the United States.”

Additionally, a GIA facility in Israel is now scheduled to open next year, after prior reports that a laboratory there would be open by fourth quarter 2011. Both the Israel and Japan initiatives will benefit the GIA’s ongoing efforts to expand lab capacity.

“GIA’s mission is to promote the public trust in gems and jewelry,” Baker said. “And we will do everything within our means to carry forth this mission in Japan and to assist the Japanese diamond community in furthering these goals.”

Additional details on the GIA’s facility and services in Japan will be announced at a later date.
