Diamond prices set world records at Sotheby’s sale
Hong Kong--Sotheby’s sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite on Oct. 5 here achieved a total of $65 million, setting both the highest total for this type of auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong and two world auction records for important colored diamonds.
For the sale, 79 percent was sold by lot and 66 percent was sold by value.
The top lot, a 6-carat fancy vivid blue diamond and pink diamond ring (below) realized $10 million, setting the world record for price per carat for any fancy vivid blue diamond at $1.7 million per carat.
A 4-carat fancy vivid orange diamond and diamond ring realized $2.9 million, setting the world record for price per carat at $705,587 per carat and also setting the highest price for any fancy vivid orange diamond at auction.
Quek Chin-Yeow, deputy chairman and head of jewellery of Sotheby’s Asia, said the auction house was pleased with record achievements.
“Buyers for the top ten lots came from five different countries, showing the international participation in this important market,” Chin-Yeow said. “Thirteen lots sold for more than $1.2 million.”
A 30-carat diamond ring, which realized $5.5 million, and a 14-carat Cartier diamond ring made circa 1931, realizing $2.7 million, were also top lots of the auction.
