Bonham's to auction 98-ct. black diamond
New York--Bonham’s Oct. 19 auction of Fine Jewelry here will feature a diverse collection of jewels spanning several periods of design, including the art deco, arts and crafts and Belle Époque periods.
“The rare, the colorful and the stunning are throughout this sale, making it a draw for jewelry appreciators around the globe,” Susan Abeles, head of Bonham’s jewelry for the United States, said.
The proposed top lot of the auction is a rare heart-shaped, 98-carat natural black diamond, cut from a piece of rough weighing 320 carats in the state of Bahia, Brazil, in 1951. The diamond is estimated to realize $70,000-$90,000.
Also included in the diamond lots is an oval modified, brilliant-cut fancy 2-carat brownish pink diamond ring (below) with an oval shaped surround, estimated to realize $50,000-$70,000.
A signed early art deco sapphire and diamond Coven-LaCloche bracelet (below), which centers a pear-shaped sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond completed by a tapered bracelet of caliber-cut sapphires and old single-cut diamonds, is estimated to realize $45,000-$50,000.
The sale will also include property consigned by the stage and screen actress Lauren Bacall, as well as jadeite jade pieces from designer George Marsh. Van Cleef & Arpels lots will be offered in the auction, with three designs coming from the Estate of Suzanne Covo of Monaco.
