New York--Colored and colorless diamonds highlighted Bonhams’ Fine Jewelry auction, held here Dec. 13, with the sale achieving a total of $4.8 million with 80 percent of the sale sold by lot.

The auction was led by a Cartier art deco emerald, onyx and diamond necklace (below), which boasts 32 graduated fluted emeralds beads. The piece was sold for $266,500 after a pre-sale estimate high of $120,000.

The private collection of Suzanne Crowell was also included in the sale, with proceeds from the six lots benefitting the Huntington Memorial Hospital, a non-profit medical center in Los Angeles.

Leading the private collection was a Van Cleef & Arpels 11.59-carat rectangular-cut diamond ring, which more than doubled its pre-sale estimate high of $80,000 by selling for $194,500.

Top diamond solitaire lots included a 5.06-carat marquise-shaped diamond realizing $146,500, a 3.22-carat rectangular-cut diamond realizing $128,500 and a Harry Winston 3-carat oval-shaped diamond, realizing $92,500.

Included in the Fine Jewelry auction was the sale of “Exceptional Jewels,” four lots from a private collection. The top lot was a diamond solitaire ring (below), which realized $3 million alone, and the remaining three lots were a fancy colored diamond and colorless diamond necklace, bracelet and pendant earrings.

The four lots achieved a combined total of $4.4 million, bringing the combined total from the Fine Jewelry and Exceptional Jewels to $9.2 million.

“The sale showed the underlying strength in the jewelry market,” Matthew Girling, group jewelry director at Bonhams, said. “We exhibited the sale in Hong Kong, London and California prior to the sale in New York and we had participation in the sale across the globe.”
