When the award season kicks into gear each winter, platinum jewelry makes many grand appearances on the red carpet, as it is often the go-to precious metal for designers working with diamonds.

This year, the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards was no exception, with statement earrings, stacked bracelets and vintage pieces among the top platinum trends.

One of the most dramatic earrings of the evening were those worn by Angelina Jolie, who maintained her tendency toward classic looks with a simple, yet statement-making pair of diamond studs weighing 25 carats, plus a 12-carat diamond ring, all in platinum by Lorraine Schwartz. Also choosing diamond studs was Jessica Biel, who wore a platinum pair of round solitaire diamond studs, 6.12 carats by Tiffany & Co., and a Tiffany opera length diamond necklace, also in platinum, worn down her back. Jessica Alba kept the attention at her face with a more ornate and dramatic pair of platinum diamond earrings, weighing 37.14 carats by Bulgari, which she paired with a pale lilac beaded Gucci gown. Charlize Theron also chose platinum earrings by Bulgari, donning a pair with three princess-cut diamonds (4.17 carats total) for the “17th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards” in Los Angeles on Jan. 12.

Stackable bracelets have yet to lose their glam factor. Natalie Portman wore three platinum and diamond bracelets by Harry Winston, along with the designer’s diamond drop earrings and a platinum and pear-shaped diamond cluster ring. Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who showed off her famous curves in a blue Vera Wang dress, wasn’t shy about her jewelry either, also going with Harry Winston platinum pieces, including earrings, two platinum and diamond cuff bracelets and a platinum and diamond cocktail ring. Pop diva Madonna chose five platinum and diamond bracelets by Neil Lane for her red-carpet turn.

With wavy hair and a strapless red dress, Reese Witherspoon looked thoroughly modern, but her vintage jewelry channeled old Hollywood. She donned European- cut diamond drop earrings in platinum (9 carats each), a pair of platinum and diamond bracelets from 1900, and platinum and diamond bracelet from the 1920s, all by Fred Leighton. Helen Mirren, too, rocked estate jewelry, choosing platinum pendant earrings with sapphires and diamonds from the 1950s by Fred Leighton, and a platinum barrel link bracelet from the 1930s, also featuring sapphires and diamonds.

A couple of younger stars showed they had a thing for vintage too. Zooey Deschanel went boho chic, pairing a platinum estate ring from 1979 by Van Cleef & Arpels featuring pearls and diamonds with a black gown featuring a fluorescent beaded Prada halter. Glee star Dianna Agron, who wore a bright red tiered gown with laser cut swan embellishments, paired the dramatic look with Fred Leighton jewelry from the 1920s, including two platinum bracelet featuring onyx and diamonds, one a line bracelet, and one with a bow.
