Platinum trends to watch in 2012
Over the past year, jewelry designers worldwide have reinterpreted classic platinum styles, making the precious white metal look fresh with each design.
From adding new elements to bridal jewelry such as hidden details and bold metalwork, to using platinum in colored gemstone fashion pieces, the trends that emerged over the holidays are sure to have an impact into 2012 and beyond.
Among the bridal jewelry innovators using almost hidden details was Tacori, which in its Crescent Collection exemplified the streamlined beauty of the diamond solitaire with lace-like signature Tacori crescent silhouettes which create windows of light along the sides of the band to create interest from every angle.

Kwiat used an art deco look to inspire its diamond and sapphire ring in platinum that features a round brilliant diamond center stone, surrounded by calibrated sapphires. With its bezel setting, the diamond almost seems hidden.
The bezel-set diamond makes for an unusual setting in this art deco-inspired diamond and sapphire ring set in platinum by Kwiat.
Another trend-setter: rings that have the two becomes one look, such as the Simon G platinum bridal ring set that features a diamond engagement ring with a matching wedding band that interlocks with it.
This platinum bridal set by Simon G shows off the two-becomes-one trend.
The platinum honors category of the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) Spectrum Awards competition also gives insight into trends that combine platinum with colored gemstones.
Among the winners in the manufacturing honors category was Mark Schneider of Mark Schneider Design. The entry was a sumptuous pair of platinum drop earrings featuring 12-millimeter black Tahitian pearls and 8 millimeter cultured freshwater pearls as well as white and black diamonds. The curved platinum setting seems to hold the pearls, invisibly, in place.

Another winner, a bridal ring by Maria Canale for Richard Krementz Gemstones, features blue sapphire and diamonds in an intricate “lace” platinum setting.
Ring by Maria Canale for Richard Krementz Gemstones features 4.10-carat blue sapphire accented with 0.77 total carats of diamonds set in platinum. It took first place in the AGTA Spectrum Awards bridal category. Photo: Robert and Orasa Weldon for AGTA.
A platinum Hearts and Arrows ring by Leonard A. Mc Cue for L.A.M. Goldsmiths also showed off the beauty of a platinum setting with a ring featuring a stunning 19-carat pear-shaped moonstone accented with diamonds. It won honorable mention in the bridal category of AGTA Spectrum Awards.
