The cold winter months tend to be a hot time for engagements, with The Knot reporting that 40 percent of all engagements occurring between the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day.

The wedding-focused site has some intriguing ideas for men looking to propose, including everything from hiring skywriters or taking out an ad in a newspaper to get across the message to the bride to arranging for a street caricaturist to sketch a picture of the couple with conversation bubbles that have the groom saying "Will you Marry Me?", and the bride saying "Yes!"

For jewelers, though, the focus is on the engagement ring, and with the economy still in limbo, price may be a concern. For jewelers that offer platinum bridal jewelry this year, there’s additional reason for couples to go for the precious white metal: per-ounce prices are lower than that of gold, offering extra value.

Michael O’Connor, jewelry and style expert points out that “designers are crafting engagement rings to suit every style,” and that many of the latest designs also fit the desire that couples have not to break the bank when they choose a ring.

Brides on a budget who like a classic look may consider a ring from Memoire’s “Bouquet” collection which features center stones surrounded by a smaller stones that make the center stone look larger.  Tacori ups the ante on the solitaire look by adding a twisted cable look on the band and encircling the center stone with pavé-set diamonds.

Memoire Bouquet diamond Bouquet Collection platinum ring features 0.50 total carat weight but the stones that encircle the center stone makes it looks like it is 1 carat.

Meanwhile, the designers at Novell Studio came up with a play on the classic look by adding two rows of pavé diamonds on either side of the center stone of a platinum diamond engagement ring.

Two rows of pavé diamonds set this platinum diamond engagement ring by Novell apart.

One of O’Connor’s favorite engagement rings of all time is one worn by actress Penelope Cruz from Javier Bardem. It features a deep blue sapphire sparkler surrounded by diamonds in the shape of flower petals, all set off in platinum.

While platinum’s white hue sets off colored stones very well, it need not be the center stone to shine. Those seeking a more unique look with colored gemstones might consider a ring by James Allen that features blue sapphire side pear-shaped stones.

The blue sapphire side stones are an alternative for those who want to add some color to an all-white look.

Brides seeking a more luxurious look might consider a ring by Uneek, whose platinum pieces include many that feature pavé diamonds on the band and encircling the center stone, giving the gem at the center a bigger look.
