ShopperTrak increases holiday sales forecast
Chicago--Less than a week after the National Retail Federation upgraded its holiday sales forecast, another company that tracks retail sales is doing the same, citing strong November results, colder weather and a later Hanukkah.
Chicago-based ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic using 40,000 units installed in retail outlets and malls throughout the country, is now predicting a 4 percent increase in sales in November and December, up from its earlier prediction of 3 percent.
The firm has not revised its forecast for foot traffic, which is expects to decline 2 percent.
ShopperTrak said it chose to revise its forecast after seeing retail sales climb 4 percent year-over-year in November. In addition, weather and calendar shifts are expected to buoy sales this week.
According to ShopperTrak, falling temperatures will help to move cold-weather gear that has been sitting on store shelves amid unseasonably warm temperatures. And a later Hanukkah, which shifted from Dec. 1 last year to Dec. 20 this year, will bring out more holiday shoppers later in the holiday season.
ShopperTrak’s revision is in line with that of the National Retail Federation, which said last Thursday it is now expecting holiday sales to increase 4 percent, up from the 3 percent predicted in October.
