Seminars announced for MJSA Expo New York

Attleboro Falls, Mass.--The MJSA will present three days of seminars at the annual MJSA Expo New York trade show, which will take place from March 11-13 at the Hilton New York here.

Sunday, March 11
The Expo will kick off with the 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. seminar “Selling Your Message--No Matter the Metal,” which will address the importance of compelling stories and messages that drive sales. Representatives from brands Alex Woo, Chamilia, Gurhan and Robin Haley Jewelry will take part in the discussion, and Andrea Hill of StrategyWerx will moderate.

“MJSA’s at the Bench Live: The Finishing Touch,” taking place from 1-2 p.m. and featuring Joel McFadden from JMD Jewelry, will offer attendees various techniques that can ensure all pieces of jewelry are finished and polished to perfection.

From 2:30-4 p.m., the seminar “Subcontracting Jewelry Work” will offer advice on how to effectively subcontract, from soliciting recommendations and comparing to crafting clear communications and managing expectations. Tina Snyder of the MJSA will moderate the discussion, and the panel will include Kitty Hundley of Sierra Design Studio, Nancy Schuring of Devon Fine Jewelry, Rosemarie Billanti of Billanti Casting Co., Inc. and Jane Bohan of Jane Bohan Inc.

“Finding Inspiration” will take place from 4:30-5:15 p.m., presented by designer and goldsmith Alishan Halebian, of Alishan. Halebian will cover producing new, creative work and how jewelry makers can stoke their creativity.

Monday, March 12
Monday’s seminars will begin with the MJSA Awards Presentation at 10:30 a.m., which will honor the recipients of the eighth annual MJSA Thinking Ahead Awards and the 2012 MJSA Vision Awards.

From 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Andrea Hill of StrategyWerx will present “By the Numbers: What’s Ahead for the Jewelry Industry,” covering who will be buying jewelry in the next 10 years, what type of jewelry they will want and what messages they’ll respond to best. The seminar will also offer practical strategies for capitalizing on current trends and positioning companies for success.

“MJSA’s at the Bench Live: Secret Shop Weapons” will take place from 1-2 p.m. and showcase tools that noted jewelers and designers rely on, as well as how to effectively apply them. Ann Cahoon of Flying Marquis Studio will present.

The seminar “Critique my Website!” is scheduled from 2:30-4 p.m., and will analyze several well-trafficked websites that have “the right stuff.” Prospective attendees may submit their own websites to critique prior to the show, and the panel will pull submissions at random to look over during the session. Eugene Brill of Rio Grande will moderate and the panel will be made up of Michael Schechter of Honora Pearls, Jennifer Gandia of Greenwich Jewelers and Kathy Maurella, who is the website consultant for Greenwich Jewelers.

From 4:30-5:15 p.m., Christine Dhein of the Revere Academy of Jewelry will present “Green Shop Practices,” a seminar covering the simple and practical steps that jewelers have taken to become more responsible and environmentally friendly.

Tuesday, March 13
The final day of the show will feature “The Future of Design Finale,” a contest designed by Jeweler’s Resource Bureau and StrategyWerx to evaluate business development skills. The prize package is a year’s worth of services in business planning, jewelry manufacturing, marketing, publicity, sales, retail promotion and training, as well as advertising in InDesign magazine. The winner will also receive a booth in the “Designer Showcase” pavilion at the JANY show, among other prizes.
