Jewelry tops list for women this Valentine’s Day
Hoffman Estates, Ill.--Whether it’s an engagement ring or a simple pair of diamond stud earrings, jewelry is what women want on Feb. 14, a new national survey commissioned by Sears shows.
According to the survey, conducted by Sentient Decision Science, 40 percent of men and women who took the survey and currently are in relationships say they are planning to, or expect, to get engaged this Valentine’s Day.
And even among those who are not in relationships or aren’t preparing for an engagement, jewelry of any kind remains the top gift choice among women. According to the survey, 29 percent of women said if they had to pick only one gift for the holiday it would be jewelry.
Following jewelry, the most desired gifts were: flowers or chocolate, cited by 20 percent of women; perfume, 9 percent; the latest technology product, 8 percent; lingerie, 8 percent; a kitchen or home item, 6 percent; shoes, a handbag or other accessory at 5 percent; clothing at 5 percent and, lastly, a fitness or exercise item, cited by 1 percent of respondents.
The survey also showed that men would be well advised to pay better attention to women’s wants, even if they don’t realize it. While 61 percent of men surveyed admitted that they have given a Valentine’s Day gift without any thought behind it, nearly 80 percent of women say they have received a gift that appeared to have no thought behind it.
Sentient Decision Science is an independent behavioral science and consulting firm. Its Valentine’s Day research is based on a survey of 1,008 U.S. consumers aged 18 and older. The data is representative of the U.S. population.
