Emerald auction to benefit Asian elephants
London--Gemfields, GIA India, World Land Trust and Jaguar Land Rover have collaborated with 10 of India’s top jewelry designers to create a pop-up collection of Zambian emerald jewelry that aims to create awareness and raise funds for the conservation initiatives of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and the World Land Trust for Asian elephants.
The one-of-a-kind collection will be launched in July and is headlined by a Ganesha sculpture with a 638-carat Gemfields Zambian emerald, created by artist Arzan Khambatta. The launch will close with a Sotheby’s auction at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai on Oct. 14. A percentage of profits will benefit the World Land Trust’s “Indian Elephant Corridor” project.
The collection follows the success of “Emeralds for Elephants,” an exhibition of emerald jewelry launched in London in 2010 that raised $1 million for the World Land Trust and the WTI.
“Gemfields is very pleased to bring Emeralds for Elephants to India this year,” Ian Harebottle, CEO of Gemfields, said. “Our London auction helped to raise a significant amount last year, and we are sure of a good response in India.”
From August to October, the collection will go on tour around India to 10 designers’ boutiques: Abaran Jewellers in Bangalore, Anmol Jewellers in Mumbai, Gem Palace in Jaipur, Khanna Jewellers in New Delhi, Meena Jewellers in Hyderabad, Narayan Jewellers in Baroda, Nirav Modi in Mumbai, Sawansukha Jewellers in Kolkata, Talwarsons Jewellers in Chandigarh and Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers in Chennai.
The World Land Trust and WTI, a non-profit conservation organization, have partnered to safeguard traditional migratory routes for elephants so they can move safely between national parks and other protected areas.
