Nielsen: Google, Facebook tops on the Web
New York--Google was the most-visited website in the United States in 2011, while Facebook reigned supreme among social networking sites, year-end data from Nielsen shows.
According to data compiled by Nielsen between January and October 2011, 153.4 million people in the United States, on average, visited Google sites from home and work computers last year. Facebook was the second most-visited site with 137.6 million visitors, followed by Yahoo with 130.1 million.
Rounding out the top five were MSN/Windows Live/Bing at 115.9 million and YouTube with 106.7 million visitors.
Among social networks and blogs, Facebook took the top spot with 137.6 million people in the United States, on average, visiting Facebook from home and work computers. Blogger was next, followed by Twitter, WordPress and the social networking site Myspace, a money-losing venture that NewsCorp sold last year for a fraction of what it paid for it.

Other data released by Nielsen included the top U.S. online destinations for video, with YouTube coming in at No. 1 by a wide margin, with 111.2 million people in the United States, on average, watching video content on YouTube from their home and work computers.
Second was VEVO with 34.6 million followed by Facebook with 29.8 million.
The top smartphone manufacturers of 2011 were Apple, with 29 percent of people who purchased new smartphones between August and October opting for this brand.
HTC ranked second at 21 percent, followed by RIM Blackberry at 17 percent, and Samsung and Motorola tied at 11 percent.
