Android retains spot as top smartphone
New York--The most recent data on mobile released by comScore shows that Google Android remains the most popular smartphone platform in the United States.
According to comScore MobiLens Service data released on Dec. 29, Android’s market share for the three-month period ending November 2011 was 47 percent, up 3 percent from 44 percent during the previous three-month period.
Apple was second with 29 percent market share, up from 27 percent in the three-month period ended August 2011. RIM, the maker of the BlackBerry, ranked third at 17 percent, followed by Microsoft at 5 percent and Symbian at 2 percent.
A total of 91.4 million people in the United States owned a smartphone in that three-month period, up from 8 percent in the preceding period.
As for mobile usage across all devices, comScore data shows that the most widely used function on mobile phones was text messaging. A total of 73 percent of mobile subscribers sent at least one text message during that three-month period, up from 71 percent in the prior period.
Downloading applications overtook browser use as the second most-utilized function on cell phones. According to comScore data, 45 percent of those with cell phones used them to download an app while 44 percent utilized their phone’s browser.
Other uses for phones included accessing a social networking site or blog (33 percent), playing games (30 percent) and listening to music (22 percent).
