JSA honors FBI, eBay personnel for crime-fighting

Jan 12, 2012

New York--The Jeweler’s Security Alliance (JSA) held a luncheon on Saturday here that awarded two individuals who have helped to fight crime against the jewelry industry.

The first recipient, Eric B. Ives, law enforcement to supervisory special agent, organized crime section, jewelry and gem program, FBI, was presented with the JSA’s 14th Annual James B. White Award.

Ives was honored for his role as the principal link at FBI headquarters for JSA on issues involving jewelry crime. During his supervision of the gem and jewelry program, the FBI conducted important, far-ranging and successful investigations of crimes against the jewelry industry which have resulted in major arrests, convictions and recoveries.

The agent also helped to organize and has supported a major effort with the GIA to train FBI personnel and foreign police personnel in basic gemology and jewelry industry practices and procedures. Through Ives’ efforts, the FBI has invited several dozen agents from around the country to Carlsbad, Calif., for two weeks of intensive training.

The second recipient, Paul Jones, is senior director of global asset protection at eBay, Inc. and was presented with the JSA’s seventh Annual Industry Service Award.

Jones was recognized for improving the integrity of the eBay marketplace, notably through closer cooperation with law enforcement and major retailers. He helped to build the PROACT program, which brings together these stakeholders in a common effort to reduce fraud, fencing and other crimes and abuses involving the eBay marketplace.

eBay has increasingly assisted law enforcement personnel with investigations involving jewelry, which has resulted in significant arrests, and has also partnered with the JSA in a multi-pronged effort to combat organized jewelry crime through mutual training and assistance.

The JSA also held a moment of silence for the six jewelers killed in 2011. John Kennedy, president of JSA, mourned the tragic murders of the jewelers and thanked the industry, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies for their continued support on JSA’s war against crime.

Founded in 1883, JSA is a non-profit trade association providing crime prevention information and services to the jewelry industry. The company has more than 23,000 member locations.
