Portland, Ore.--Fred Meyer Jewelers has become one of the first major jewelry chains in the country to make strides in the m-commerce arena with the launch of websites optimized for access on both the iPhone and Android devices.

Fred Meyers Jewelers said it partnered with Moovweb, which has created sites for retailers including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Walmart, to make mobile-optimized versions of FredMeyerJewelers.com and LittmanJewelers.com.

The sites have large images, detailed product information and customer reviews, as well as access to the chains’ selection of jewelry, the ability to purchase gift cards, access to wish lists and a store locator function.

“Fred Meyer Jewelers is committed to giving our customers the ability to easily shop how and when they want. Our new mobile site puts the power into the hands of our on-the-go customers whether they want to buy online, find a store or are looking for detailed product information,” said Kirsten Darrow, vice president of marketing and e-commerce at Fred Meyer Jewelers.

The latest statistics on m-commerce show that the channel is growing in importance. According to a study from marketing and public relations firm Walker Sands Communications, more than 12 percent of website traffic originated from mobile devices in the fourth quarter 2011, up 102 percent year-over-year and up 6 percent from the first quarter 2011.

To celebrate the launch of its mobile-optimized sites, Fred Meyer and Littman Jewelers are offering two-day free shipping on all orders through Feb. 14.

Founded in 1973, Fred Meyer operates almost 400 jewelry stores in 36 states under the Fred Meyer Jewelers and Littman Jewelers nameplates.

The company ranks No. 15 on National Jeweler’s 2011 list of $100 Million Supersellers.
