Nobel Watch Co. to gift Obama, other prizewinners

Jan 26, 2010
Staten Island, N.Y.--Nobel Watch Co., may have to change its tag line, "I didn't get the Nobel Prize, but I got a Nobel Watch," given its decision to present President Obama and the other 12 recent Nobel Laureate winners with an exclusively designed watch.

In November, the U.S.-based Nobel Watch announced plans to give Obama a watch to honor the president as the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Shortly thereafter, the company says it received so many requests to do so that it decided to expand the gesture to all 13 Nobel laureate winners, who won prizes for work in a variety of fields, including physics, economics, chemistry, medicine and  literature.

"We were both surprised and touched by this outpouring of support; this is a very proud moment for our small company," Nobel Watch President Izzy Genuth said in a press release announcing the plan. "Therefore, we have planned to establish an annual presentation to all Nobel Prize winners in the years to come."

Registered notifications have been forwarded to all 13 winners across the globe from China, Germany, Canada, Israel and the United States, advising them of their impending gift. Genuth plans to either personally award the Nobel watch to each of the laureates or to appoint a company ambassador to perform the ceremonies.

The Swiss-made Nobel watch that Genuth selected for the prizewinners has a distinctive, patented "waving crystal" and for each one,  the case will be engraved with the winners' name, the name of the award and the date.

Nobel Watch Co. specializes in the manufacture and distribution of Swiss-made stainless steel and ceramic timepieces, which retail from $295 and up. The company uses scratch-resistant sapphire crystals and covers its watches with a two-year buckle-to-buckle service warranty.

The company has created watches with the Law and Order logo imprinted on the dial for the cast members of the NBC TV series, including actors Benjamin Bratt and the late Jerry Orbach, who were the first to be honored by the watch brand for their performances in the series.

The brand has also presented its timepieces to New York Yankee coaches, former U.S. president Bill Clinton (while he was campaigning for president with the slogan "Time for change") and former New York State governor Mario Cuomo.
