Equipe watch brand thanks Leno for Detroit laughs
Detroit—A good laugh is welcome in tough times, so when funnyman Jay Leno brought some comic relief to Detroit autoworkers—gratis—the city's homegrown watch brand, Equipe, stepped up to thank him.
Throughout 2010, Leno provided free comedy shows to the Motor City's unemployed autoworkers at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. During the recent Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance car show, through its relationship with Car & Driver Radio, Equipe showed its appreciation by offering The Tonight Show host a new timepiece, the Equipe Spring.
"Equipe's design team includes former auto industry veterans whose knowledge of automotive design inspires the aesthetics of Equipe's watches, so Mr. Leno's kindness definitely hit close to home", said Jeff Freedman, founder of Equipe. "The city of Detroit and all former GM, Chrysler and Ford workers were touched by Mr. Leno's generosity. We wanted to thank him on behalf of Detroit's unemployed auto workers by giving him a watch from Detroit's only automotive watch manufacturer."
Equipe watches pay homage to the beauty of automobiles through the use of colors typically used to paint automobiles, watch bands that are designed to resemble tire treads, and design motifs that mimic identifiable car parts in miniature. Some of its collections include Gasket, Chassis and Headlight, among others, and prices start at $299 retail.
All of the brand's watches utilize high-grade surgical stainless steel, Miyota/Citizen movements and hardened non-glare mineral crystals. Other features include screw-down crowns, screw-in casebacks, and luminous hands, markers or dials. Each timepiece is water-resistant to 100 meters and backed by a two-year limited warranty.
