Swiss goalie named new Bucherer ambassador
Lucerne, Switzerland—Swiss luxury watchmaker Carl F. Bucherer has named pro soccer player Diego Benaglio, goalkeeper for the Swiss national team, its newest brand ambassador.
According to Bucherer, the 27-year-old Benaglio went pro in 1999 when he received an offer to join Grasshopper, a Zurich-based club. He later played for VfB Stuttgart in Germany, the Desportivo Nacional club, which plays in Portugal’s top soccer league, and won the national championship in Germany while playing for VfL Wolfsburg.
At the same time, the Swiss national team selected Benaglio as their main goalkeeper for the 2008 European championships in Switzerland and Austria, and he played goal for Switzerland when it knocked out Spain 1-0 in the first round of the 2010 World Cup, a shocking upset of a team that was favored by many to win the entire tournament. It was Switzerland’s first win against Spain and also its only World Cup victory.
“Diego Benaglio embodies the values of our Carl F. Bucherer brand in an impressive way,” Sascha Moeri, chief executive officer of Bucherer Montres S.A., said. “His passion for what he does, his continual striving for technical perfection and the determination to go his own way are the same qualities which we also have to demonstrate constantly in the assembly of our top-quality timekeepers.”
