Hublot inks skiing star, gives back in Miami
Geneva—Watchmaker Hublot is adding a third star of the skiing world to its already impressive list of snow-shredding partners, the brand announced recently.
Maria Riesch, who currently leads the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup General Classification, joins Bode Miller and Dario Cologna as ambassadors for Hublot. A native of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Riesch won the Super Combined and the Slalom at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. She will compete in the upcoming 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships, for which Hublot is the official timekeeper. The championships are scheduled for Feb. 7 to 20 in Riesch’s hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
To mark the occasion of Riesch becoming an ambassador, Hublot will unveil its first white “Aero Bang Garmisch.” Only 250 of the timepieces will be available, mainly during the World Championships.
In addition to inking another top skier as an ambassador, Hublot also was an official partner for a Jan. 20 event at the home of Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley benefiting the Miami HEAT Charitable Fund. The fund supports programs for at-risk families in South Florida, including Jackson Memorial Children’s Hospital, SafeSpace, a domestic violence shelter for women and children, and the Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Community.
Joining Hublot at their table were New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and his girlfriend, actress Cameron Diaz, as well as Miami Heat owner and Carnival Corporation Chief Executive Officer Micky Arison and his wife, Madelaine. The 200-person guest list also included Heat playmakers Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwayne Wade and a performance by Grammy winner Michael McDonald.
During the course of the evening, Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver (above, right) joined Riley on stage and presented him with an engraved King Power Unico timepiece, while a 38-mm Black Magic Big Bang with a diamond bezel went to Riley’s wife. With Biver’s permission, Riley auctioned off his watch on the spot to raise more money for the HEAT Charitable Fund, and bidding exceeded $100,000.
