Basel--Seiko Corporation of America has announced the appointment of United States soccer icon Landon Donovan as its new brand ambassador.

Donovan will celebrate the brand’s 130th anniversary by representing the new Sportura Collection.

“I have always looked for a watch that keeps up with my active lifestyle, which is why I like the comfort, innovation and design of the Seiko Sportura Collection,” Donovan said.

A competitive soccer player since the age of five, Donovan is the captain of the Los Angeles Galaxy major league soccer team and is the all-time leader in scoring and assists for the United States National Team.

Donovan is also the four-time winner of the United States soccer “Male Athlete of the Year” award and a six-time recipient of the “Honda Player of the Year” award. During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was a driving force behind his team’s first win since 1930, and has made more international appearances than any other active American soccer player.

“Synonymous with the essence of Seiko, Mr. Donovan shows a dedication to perfection and success that we commend,” Ken Hagiwara, president and CEO of Seiko Corporation of America, said. “We look forward to working with him.”

In addition to working with Seiko, Donovan is also involved with charitable organizations including the Make a Wish Foundation and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The also is a supporter of the Wild Soccer Bunch, a series of educational books for young children.

Seiko Corportation of America unveiled the new Sportura Collection globally on Thursday, at the opening day of Baselworld 2011.
