Live from BaselWorld: New from Rolex
By Michelle Graff
Basel--Rolex focused on discreet updates to flagship products at BaselWorld 2011, introducing new versions of a handful of models in its popular “Oyster” collection.
The new “Oyster Perpetual Explorer II,” a model first launched in 1971, was enlarged to 42 mm and features the latest Rolex movement, the calibre 3187 (below). The design for the chronometer’s 24-hour hand was directly inspired by the 1971 model in honor of the watch’s 40th anniversary.
An additional touch on the black dial version of the Explorer II is the black base on the “phantom-effect” hands, which give them the appearance of floating over the dial, another nod to the original Explorer II.
The new version of the “Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II” regatta chronograph has a Cerachrom bezel, a corrosion-resistant ceramic bezel developed and patented by Rolex. In addition, this year Rolex introduced an Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II (below), marking the first time Rolex’s patented pink gold alloy and steel have appeared on an Oyster professional model.
For women, Rolex introduced a gem-set bezel and gold crystal dial for the 26 mm “Oyster Perpetual Lady-Date Just” (below). The new Lady-Date Just is available in yellow or white Rolesor.
Rolex has been introducing updates to its Lady-Date Just since 2009, encompassing new designs in the 36 mm and 31 mm models and now concluding with updates to the smallest Lady-Date Just, the 26 mm.
