Bonhams watch auction set for June 16
New York--Bonhams fine watches auction, scheduled for June 16 here, will include pieces from Breguet, Patek Philippe and Cartier, “a diverse group of watches that will appeal to novice and advanced collectors alike,” according to Jonathan Snellenburg, director of fine watches for the auction house.
Highlighting the sale is a 1989 limited edition Souscription Set that includes a platinum wristwatch and a pocket watch, presented in a wood display case fitted with an accessory drawer that includes a magnifier, screwdriver, setting pin and platinum watch chain. The set is estimated to realize $150,000 - $200,000.
Souscription watches were Breguet’s economical, high-quality, limited-quantity watches that were paid for by subscribers in advance. A second Souscription highlight is the Breguet et fils, a gold montre pocket watch dating from the early 19th century estimated to realize $12,000 - $13,000.
Several Patek Philippe lots will be offered at the auction, one a stainless steel, classically designed Calatrava wristwatch that was given to the winner of the 1st Tour de Romandie, a stage race in Switzerland, in 1947. Inscribed by Walt Disney, a sponsor for the race, the piece is estimated to realize $12,000 - $15,000.
A jade, lapis, diamond and mother of pearl pendulette by Cartier will be included in the sale, estimated to realize $5,000 - $7,000. From the estate of Norma Shearer, a famous star in early Hollywood, the pendulette is carved from a jade boulder with a mother of pearl face and diamond hands.
