Antiquorum N.Y. watch auction nets $4.5m
New York--Auction house Antiquorum’s June 8 auction of important modern and vintage timepieces here achieved a total of $4.5 million in sales, featuring a collection of 351 luxury timepieces, 118 percent of which were sold by value.
“The outcome of our June auction in New York confirms that the market for high-end complicated and unique timepieces continues to thrive worldwide,” Evan Zimmermann, president and CEO at Antiquorum Auctioneers, said.
The Vacheron & Constantin Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater Piece Unique, made in 2002, realized $374,500 at the auction. The timepiece (below) was accompanied by the original box, certificate of authenticity, instruction booklet and polishing cloth.
The Audemars Piguet Grand Complication Piece Unique (below) with titanium and 18-karat pink gold is self-winding, water resistant, and features a co-axial round button split-seconds chronograph and a perpetual calendar. Specially made for and bearing the signature of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the timepiece was offered as a unique piece for charity in 2000 and realized $374,500 at the auction.
Bidding for Patek Philippe timepieces was competitive. The platinum Patek Philippe ref. 5050 (below) with a Roman dial sold for $140,500, and features a perpetual calendar, retrograde date, leap year indication and moon phases. The watch was originally sold in 1999.
The vintage Rolex market showed strong interest with the “Jean-Claude Killy” ref. 6236 (below) selling for $128,500. The timepiece, made in stainless steel in 1960, is water resistant with a round button chronograph, registers and a triple date.
“With both modern and vintage watches from various manufacturers selling strongly, today’s sale proved that timepieces in exceptional condition continue to be in demand by collectors across the globe,” Charles Tearle, watch director and auctioneer at Antiquorum USA, said.
