Watch news: Movado marks Jeter's 3,000th
New York--Movado recently introduced a watch to commemorate a major baseball milestone while a number of other watch brands are focusing on the polo grounds this summer.
Earlier this month, Movado Group Inc. launched a special edition “Bold” watch to commemorate New York Yankee and Movado brand ambassador Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit on July 9. Jeter is the first Yankee to reach this milestone.
The special edition watch (below) features an indigo blue metallic dial customized with the number “2”--Jeter’s number--positioned at 2 o’clock. The caseback is engraved to commemorate the 3,000th hit and the watch comes in a special sleeve accompanied by a thank-you note from Jeter.
Only 300 pieces have been issued and the watch retails for $550. Movado will donate $100 for each piece sold to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation, a charity to encourage children to pursue healthy lifestyles and academic excellence.
Richard Mille was one of the title sponsors of The British Polo Day Charity Cup, played July 2 on the grounds of Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber’s Berkshire Estate, Watership Down. After four chukkas, the Richard Mille team (below), which played against a team including His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales, prevailed and received the charity cup trophy from guest of honor Richard Mille.
At the event, Mille announced that a one-off, 18-karat red gold RM 033 automatic caliber will be auctioned later in the year to benefit the cup’s two charities this year, Tusk Trust and Sentebale.
In New York, Sector “No Limits” announced that it will sponsor the 15th anniversary season of Bridgehampton Polo in the Hamptons this summer. The polo series takes place at the Circa Championship Field at Two Trees Farm on six consecutive Fridays between July 23 and Aug. 27.
Sector will host a section within the Blue Star Jets’ VIP tent each week and will have a separate, free-standing exhibit with Sector timepieces on the two days of the tournament finals, Aug. 13 and 27. In addition, the winners of the tournament will receive Sector watches from the new “Shark Master” collection (right).
Tonight, Hublot is hosting a dinner at Cipriani Wall Street with members of the Manchester United soccer club to benefit the Manchester United Foundation. During the evening, all the players and manager Sir Alex Ferguson will participate in the “Art of Fusion” fashion show, showcasing the latest pieces from Hublot. After the show, a live auction of Ferguson’s timepiece and other Manchester United collectibles will take place.
Manchester United is currently in the midst of a five-city U.S. tour. The soccer club and Hublot have collaborated to create a total of three timepieces, including the latest, the “King Power Red Devil” (below), which has grass from Old Trafford Stadium, the team’s home field, embedded in the indexes.
Earlier this month, watch brand Roger Dubuis got into the sporting action when Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, wore the “Excalibur Chronograph” in stainless steel to the ESPY awards in Los Angeles, to both present and to accept his award for Best NFL Player.
Rodgers (below) was the MVP of Super Bowl XLV, in which the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31 to 25.
