Sotheby’s appoints new head of watches
Hong Kong--Sotheby’s has announced the appointment of Tim Bourne as the worldwide head of its watches department, a Hong Kong-based position where he will oversee the company’s Asian watch auctions in addition to those in Geneva, New York and London.
With 20 years of experience in the industry, Bourne said he aims to “create an innovative and forward-thinking department that can capture rapidly growing market opportunities, as well as shifting the focus on watch auctions worldwide.”
Bourne’s appointment is a strategic move in response to the rapid expansion of the auction market for watches globally, especially in Asia. In 1997, Sotheby’s pioneered the auction of watches in Asia under Bourne’s direction, and has remained involved in the industry, working in consignment, business development, marketing and sales and administration.
“With his insight into our truly international market, Bourne will add invaluable experience as we make further investment in our global business, especially in Asia, an important hub of growth and great opportunities in today’s watch auction market,” Kevin Ching, CEO of Sotheby’s Asia, said.
Bourne joins two additions to Sotheby’s global watches team made earlier this year: John Reardon, head of watches and clocks, New York, and Sharon Chan, watch specialist, Hong Kong.
Sotheby’s next auction of important watches will be held in Hong Kong on Oct. 6.
