Watch news: Citizen, Perrelet, Piaget, more

Nov 7, 2011

New York--A new limited-edition timepiece from Citizen, three new models from Perrelet and a musical appearance by Piaget are among the developments in the watch industry this fall.

Citizen recently introduced the Eco-Drive “Satellite Wave,” (below) a limited-edition watch that searches for the closest of the 24 navigation satellites that orbit the Earth. It then captures the day, date and time signal from the appropriate satellite, whose signals are controlled by atomic clocks, making the time-keeping ultra-precise.

Perrelet has debuted three turbine versions of its double-rotor watches in the U.S. market, each with its own theme.

The 44 mm “Turbine Limited Edition” (below), which plays on the wealth and passions featured in spy novels, has golden ingots on the lower dial. When the wearer moves their wrist, the turbine spins, and the gold is visible between the blades. Perrelet is making only 888 of these timepieces.

The 50 mm “Turbine XL America/Limited Edition” (below, left) operates the same way but features a deconstructed version of Old Glory. The dial is painted with red-and-white stripes while squares of blue with white stars, 50 stars in total, decorate the hour circle. Perrelet is making 777 of the Turbine America watches.

Finally, the 44 mm “Turbine Poker” (above, right) has playing cards spread around the dial that play hide-and-seek with the 12-blade wheel.

Florence Welch, lead singer of rock-and-soul band “Florence and the Machine,” recently donned a watch, as well as a trio of rings, from Piaget for her new music video, “Shake It Out,” a single on the band’s new album “Ceremonials.” Welch wore the brand’s “Possession” watch in white gold with a single diamond, slim Roman numerals on the dial and a black satin strap.

“Shake It Out” can be see here.

In addition, Piaget recently introduced the Dancer “pièce exceptionnelle,” an entirely gem-set timepiece that is touted as the thinnest exceptional mechanical watch in the world. The watch (below) has a 7.7 mm case, almost 1,230 diamonds and a hand-wound, 2.5 mm-thick Calibre 830P movement, Piaget’s own. The watch has a 72-hour power reserve.

In late October, Movado was one of the presenting sponsors of GQ magazine’s fourth annual “Better Men Better World Search,” an integral part of The Gentlemen’s Fund philanthropic initiative. Each year, the publication conducts a nationwide search to find “everyday heroes” with entries submitted by readers of both the online and print versions of the magazine.

This year’s winner was Jake Wood, a Marine combat veteran who formed Team Rubicon, a group of volunteer first responders, doctors, nurses and combat vets who traveled to Haiti in help with post-earthquake relief efforts. He formed the group via Facebook, and his group accumulated $250,000 in medical supplies and donations for the earthquake-ravaged country.

Wood, along with four other finalists, was honored at The Gentlemen’s Ball in New York City on Oct. 26. He received a Movado SE Extreme watch and a donation to the charity of his choice. The runners-up received a Movado Bold Watch and a donation.

Earlier this fall, Hamilton introduced the new “Khaki Field Auto Chrono,” (below) available in both 38 mm and 42 mm models.

The watch launched nationwide in September and retails for $1,545. It is available in stainless steel, with a black leather or brown leather strap and is water resistant up to 100 feet.
