Pateks, tourbillons to lead Bonhams’ NY auction
New York--An extremely rare Patek Philippe “TV watch” is among the highlights of Bonhams' upcoming auction, scheduled to take place Dec. 8 in New York.
Nicknamed the “TV watch” because of its tonneau-shaped case, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5020 is a platinum perpetual calendar chronograph made in 1998. It comes with an additional diamond-set black dial.
The watch is accompanied by its factory service record and has been re-sealed in a plastic sleeve by Patek Philippe. It is estimated to sell for between $280,000 and $320,000.
The sale also includes a group of 25 complicated modern mechanical watches from a single collector, including four tourbillon watches. These include a 200th anniversary commemorative watch made by Breguet in 2001, estimated to fetch between $70,000 and $80,000, and a Girard Perregaux tourbillon built to the firm’s proprietary “three-bridge” design. That watch is expected to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000.
The sports watches in the sale are two “Paul Newman” Rolex Dayton chronographs from the 1970s, one in steel (below, left) and one in gold (below, right). Both watches were still property of their original owner and are expected to garner between $40,000 and $45,000 and $80,000 and $120,000, respectively.
Another highlight of the sale is a large, gold 1865 presentation pocket watch (below) engraved with an image of New York City’s infamous Washington Market. Located where Ground Zero is today, it was a food market for residents of that area of New York at that time.
The watch, estimated to fetch between $3,500 and $4,500, honors a prominent member of the “Washington Market Social Club,” an organization of grocers who modernized the market.
All lots will be on preview at Bonhams in New York from Dec. 3 to 7. The auction, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Dec. 8, will be simulcast at Bonhams in San Francisco.
