Tourneau hangs mistletoe, puckers up
New York--Even the homeliest shoppers have a chance of receiving a holiday-season smooch at the Tourneau store on Madison Avenue.
Last week, Tourneau unveiled what it is touting as the world’s largest mistletoe ball (below). It is 5-6 feet in diameter and is suspended from the ceiling of the brand’s 3,135-square-foot concept store, which opened earlier this year.
“As a company, we wanted to create a destination for New York City locals and visitors alike to create a holiday memory to cherish over the years,” store manager Michael Gordon said.
According to a history provided by Tourneau, the use of mistletoe in connection with love and kissing dates back centuries. It is referenced in ancient Norse mythology in stories about the goddess Frigg, who said that the plant brought love into the world.
Centuries later, it was mentioned again in English literature, with young men and women kissing under the mistletoe, often as a promise of marriage. The first mention of mistletoe as a holiday tradition was in 1820 in Washington Irving’s The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon.
