Breitling to auction 'Airwolf' online
Wilton, Conn.--From now through Feb. 29, fans of Breitling will have the chance to buy one of the brand’s limited edition timepieces via an online auction.
Breitling is selling the “Naval Centennial Limited Edition Airwolf” timepiece to benefit the National Flight Academy (NFA) LLC, a company that brings aviation-inspired programs to homes, classrooms, communities and online to inspire science, technology, math and engineering, or STEM, learning. The NFA is a subsidiary of the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla.
The sale of the piece will create the “Breitling Scholars” program at the NFA, which will fund 100 student scholarships per year to attend the NFA’s camp, Ambition.
Breitling created the Airwolf to commemorate the 100th anniversary of naval aviation.
The brand created only 500 of this watch, and the one up for auction online is No. 1. Various aviators wore the Airwolf for a trip around the world that began last year in May with Commander Mark Kelly on the Space Shuttle Endeavor’s last flight into space. That trip alone logged 6.5 million miles.
Pilots to don the watch include Breitling Jet Team Leader Jaques Bothelin, New Zealand pilot Keith Skilling, German pilot Matthias Dolderer and French acrobatic champion Oliver Masurel.
In addition to the watch, the winning bidder will receive the official aviators’ flight log book, which accompanied every pilot on each individual flight, and will be personally presented this package by Kelly.
The starting bid was $15,000 and, as of Thursday afternoon, bidding had risen to $31,000.
The auction began at midnight on Feb. 15 and continues until 5 p.m. EST on Feb. 29.
