GIA, JSA launch crime alert network

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced the launch of a "Neighborhood Watch"-type network in which jewelers and police can quickly share information about jewelry-related crimes, suspects and suspicious circumstances in any given area.

The network, called the GIA Alumni Chapter Crime Alert Network, will include jewelers, police and the Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA), a non-profit trade association that works closely with the FBI and local law enforcement agencies.

When the JSA learns of crimes, it will e-mail crime alerts to the GIA Alumni headquarters department in Carlsbad, Calif., which will in turn e-mail the warnings to the appropriate GIA chapters and GIA graduates.

GIA graduates who hear about a jewelry-related crime but do not have a GIA Alumni Chapter in their area can e-mail the JSA directly. The JSA will also try to put those graduates in touch with another existing local crime network in the area.

"We believe that communication among jewelers and with their local police is key when it comes to protecting people against jewelry-related crimes," JSA President John Kennedy said in a media release. "Working with GIA to spread information about industry-related crimes to jewelers across the country will keep the level of mutual awareness high, result in more arrests and help prevent additional crimes from happening."
