Today’s criminals are going to extraordinary lengths to commit crimes at jewelry businesses. Even jewelers located in high-traffic areas like malls are becoming victims of violent smash-and-grab robberies.

With so much at stake, can you afford to have subpar physical and electronic security protecting your business?

In a recent webinar presented by David Sexton, Vice President of Loss Prevention at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, six particular areas of security at jewelry businesses were examined. Here’s what’s recommended:

Security guards: Armed, uniformed, active off-duty police officers provide a visible and highly recognizable deterrent to would-be criminals.

Showcases: Displays should be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and have Burglary Resistant Glazing Material (BRGM) on all sides.

Surveillance cameras: Having cameras with 360-degree views positioned in multiple locations around your premises provides better coverage for spotting suspicious incidents, as well as identifying suspects if a crime is committed.

Access control systems: Locked door buzzers and mantraps can impede criminal activity, but it’s imperative that all associates follow a consistent operating procedure.

Alarm system: Much like showcases, an alarm listed by UL is a must for jewelry businesses to ensure performance standards, service, repair, and general maintenance standards are all met.

Safes: Following a consistent pattern; safes should also be UL-listed, but not with just any rating — jewelers need the protection of a TRTL-15x6 or better to secure their merchandise.

If you want to learn more about what was shared in the webinar, you’re in luck! Both of these resources provide tips and advice aimed at helping jewelers run safe, secure, and successful businesses:
