Some exceptional jewels stepped into the spotlight this week, as Christie’s prepares to sell the jewelry of a woman who married into the Bloomingdale family and a museum in Los Angeles gets ready to display a collection of fancy colored diamonds.

The calendar flipped to December, celebrating three new birthstones, one of which--tanzanite--recently became the topic of a newly published book.

Meanwhile, retailer Tiffany unveiled its holiday windows in New York just before it released the results from its latest fiscal quarter.
