New York--Cartier, Piaget, and Roger Dubuis are the nominees in the watch design category of Jewelers of America’s 2016 Gem Awards, a new category for the annual event that honors excellence in the jewelry industry.

Since it was founded in 1847, Cartier has grown into a brand known for its excellence and creativity in creating jewelry, watches and precious objects that are destined to mark a milestone in someone’s life and stand the test of time.

Piaget, founded in 1874, is known for its extravagant and creative high jewelry designs, thin movements and artistic dials, as well as high complications. The company is one of the only remaining watchmakers that designs and crafts its own cases, bracelets and movements.

Roger Dubuis, meanwhile, offers a modern interpretation of haute horlogerie, combining high-end complications with unique design. Started in 1995, the brand has a state-of-the-art production facility in Geneva and manufactures only 4,500 timepieces every year. Among its landmark movements is the iconic Excalibur Double Tourbillon Skeleton.

The Gem Awards honor individuals and brands whose work raises the visibility and status of fine jewelry and watches. This year’s event will recognize individuals in four categories: media excellence, watch design, jewelry design and lifetime achievement.

Thursday’s reveal of the nominees for watch design means that nominees in three of the four categories already have been announced.

In media excellence they are Rob Bates, Kyle Anderson and Rachel Garrahan, while Temple St. Clair, Sevan Bicakci and Caroline Scheufele are the nominees for jewelry design.

JA said the winner in the final category, lifetime achievement, will be revealed soon. The winners for media excellence, watch design and jewelry design will be announced live during the Gem Awards ceremony, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 8 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.

Tickets for the Gem Awards, as well as sponsorship and advertising opportunities, are available for purchase on the JA website.
