Gem Legacy Adventures Announces 2024 Dates for East Africa Trip
Registration is open now to join the for-profit arm of Gem Legacy on its third trip to Tanzania and Kenya.
A group of 13 will travel to East Africa where the 10-day itinerary includes visiting several artisanal colored gemstone mines, safaris inside national parks in both countries, cultural experiences and a service project day at one of the Gem Legacy initiatives.
As of press time, there were 12 spots still available on the 2024 adventure, as well as 2 spots remaining for an upcoming trip in August 2023.
While travelers are not required to be members of the jewelry industry, the trip poses an opportunity for those in the trade to “visit gem mining at the source in order to speak more authoritatively about it or to address responsible gem mining questions,” the company said.
A former senior editor for National Jeweler shared her experiences in East Africa after taking the trip in 2022.
Gem Legacy Adventures is the for-profit partner of Gem Legacy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community development in East African colored gemstone mining communities.
Profits of Gem Legacy Adventures fund Gem Legacy’s nonprofit administrative costs, backing the company’s promise that all donations go directly to its initiatives.
The cost of the East Africa trip is $4,850 per person for a single room and $4,400 per person for a double room, according to the Gem Legacy Adventures website.
The fare includes hotels, meals, transportation to and from the airport with group flight, and entry to the mines. It does not include airfare, alcohol, gifts, visas, immunizations, or tips. A deposit of $800 per person is required upon registration and the full amount is due 12 weeks prior to travel.
The website also states that a $1,000 donation to Gem Legacy since Dec. 1, 2022, is required per person or per couple traveling together.
Members of the jewelry industry whose company donates, or has donated, since Dec. 1, 2022, may all travel under that one donation.
