5 great jewelry exhibitions to see this fall
From New York to Delaware to Denver, National Jeweler outlines five jewelry exhibitions worth checking out this autumn.
1. Glittering World: Navajo Jewelry of the Yazzie Family
On Nov. 13, 300 pieces of authentic Navajo jewelry will be exhibited at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, located in downtown Manhattan. The diversity of design in the pieces reflects a long history of migrations, trade and cultural exchange, and the jewelry emphasizes reciprocity, harmony, balance and respect for family.
2. The Power of Style: Verdura at 75
American jewelry brand Verdura is marking its 75th anniversary by displaying more than 150 pieces made by late jeweler Duke Fulco di Verdura, including original jewels and objets d’art. Gouache jewelry designs, archival materials and personal miniature paintings also will be included in the exhibition, which opened Tuesday and will run through Dec. 23 at 745 Fifth Ave. in New York.
3. Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century
The Denver Art Museum will showcase more than 250 pieces of jewelry, watches and other precious objects produced by Cartier in this exhibition, which will trace the brand’s history from the turn of the 20th century to 1975. It will be open from Nov. 16 to March 15.
4. Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire This exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will highlight the attire, accessories and jewelry worn by people in mourning throughout history. Scheduled for Oct. 21 through Feb. 1, the display specifically will explore the aesthetic development and cultural implications of mourning fashions of the early 19th and 20th centuries.
5. Costumes of Downton Abbey
Running now until Jan. 4, the Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, Del. will showcase clothing and jewelry from the award-winning PBS series Downton Abbey. Pieces in this exhibition include a feather hair slide, a wave scroll tiara and a double-drop necklace of pearls and crystals, all made by Swarovski.
