The announcement coincided with its full-year results, with growth driven by its jewelry brands.
Amazon to Split Second HQ Between 2 Cities
They are both in the Northeast, and the e-commerce giant will also open a big new operations center in the South.
Seattle—Amazon has confirmed it: New York City and the D.C. suburb of Arlington, Virginia, will be the two locations for its new headquarters.
In addition, the e-commerce giant announced Tuesday that it is opening an Operations Center of Excellence in Nashville, Tennessee, that will employ more than 5,000.
Located north of The Gulch in downtown Nashville, the facility will handle order fulfillment, transportation and supply chain.
Amazon’s New York headquarters will be in Long Island City, a formerly industrial Queens neighborhood that sits right on the East River across from Midtown Manhattan.
The Arlington headquarters will be similarly situated; it will be located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., in a neighborhood being dubbed National Landing. It is comprised of Crystal City and Pentagon City in Arlington plus Potomac Yards in neighboring Alexandria, Virginia.
Amazon said it opted to split its second headquarters between two cities because it can “recruit more top talent by being in two locations” and called New York and Arlington “fantastic cities that attract a lot of talent.”
The Seattle-based company formally announced its plans Tuesday, though it has been rumored for weeks that the e-commerce giant was planning a split between the D.C. metro area and New York.
Between the two, Amazon said it will invest $5 billion and create more than 50,000 jobs.
Hiring for the new headquarters in New York and Arlington will begin in 2019. Hiring for the Tennessee fulfillment facility also will begin next year.
