Piece of the Week: Daria de Koning’s Jellyfish Earrings
They capture the movement of the creature that inspired them.
An animal occasionally sneaks its way into Los Angeles-based designer Daria de Koning’s gemstone-laden range, typically into the one-of-a-kind category, as with these “Piece of the Week” Jellyfish earrings.
The designer—who was raised in New York City to a Dutch parent and American parent and often summered in Europe as a child—equates herself to a painter, her beloved colored gemstones “brushstrokes from the Earth’s core.”
While most of the designer’s gems become non-figurative jewelry, this particular array of stones inspired de Koning in a whimsical direction.
Rubellites form the body of the “jellyfish,” accented with ruby and sapphire cabochons, all encased in 18-karat yellow gold. 18-karat rose gold form the “en tremblant” or “trembling” tentacles, pinpricked with tiny white diamonds and ending in pear-shaped tanzanites.
Truly unique to de Koning’s body of work, the earrings sell for $48,000 via the designer’s website.
