Target opening more stores in Canada

Mississauga, Ontario--Target Corp. is continuing its expansion into Canada with the opening of nine more stores in five provinces over the course of 2014.
The retailer, which opened its first stores outside the United States last year when it pushed north of the border, plans to open stores at The Stockyards in Toronto, Kingsway Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, and Hillside Centre in Victoria, British Columbia in the spring.
Following these three stores will be summer openings at Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga, Park Place in Barrie, Ontario, and Carrefour Candiac in Candiac, Quebec.
In the fall, Target stores are scheduled to open in St. Laurent, Ottawa, Sheridan Centre in Mississauga and Polo Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Target said Wednesday that it will employ an average of 150 people at each of the new stores, which amounts to about 1,350 new jobs.
Target’s announcement about opening stores and adding positions follows last week’s news that the Minneapolis-based retailer would be laying off 475 workers, reportedly mostly from its headquarters, and leaving another 700 positions unfilled.
In a story about the layoffs, one retail analyst told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the layoffs were due in part to a poor return on investment from Target’s expansion into Canada.
Target opened a total of 124 stores in Canada last year, meaning the nine opening this year will bring the retailer’s total to 133 across the country.
