The 10 Best Jewels from the SAG Awards

The gowns were demure but the jewels were piled on at the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Los Angeles--The jewels were out at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night, as the freight train of glamour that is awards season rolls along on its way to its final stop, the Oscars.

The SAG Awards red carpet was less overtly bling-filled and more cerebral than the glamorous Golden Globe Awards, with a few blindingly bright exceptions (we’re looking at you, Viola Davis.)

Layering was key, as were statement earrings.

Of all the actors present, 10 outshone the rest in the jewel department.

The evening belonged to actress Viola Davis, who received a SAG Award in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category for her performance in “Fences,” and flaunted this ornate bib necklace from Nirav Modi. Magnificent jewels can be easily lost in photographs, but this “Grand Celestial” diamond necklace could be seen from a mile away. Davis kept the rest of her look simple--utilizing a strapless gown as a blank canvas with which to accessorize--for a completely winning look.

Leave it to a model to rock one of the best ensembles of the night. Chrissy Teigen, the wife of musician John Legend, who had a part in “La La Land,” wore a single Nikos Koulis earring (which doubles as a brooch), and lariat that perfectly accentuated her low neckline. Koulis’s modern take on Art Deco motifs makes his jewels instant classics that are utterly deserving of red carpet attention.

Here is a better look at Koulis’ emerald-bedecked convertible earring on Teigen.

Amy Adams was up for an award in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category for her performance in the film “Arrival.” The perennially-nominated actress knows her way around a red carpet. She sported a simple black column dress by Brandon Maxwell, letting her matching set of Cartier jewels, which included a collar, earrings and bracelet, do all the talking.

Irene Neuwirth made a couple of appearances at the SAG Awards, but none as impactful as this double-strand necklace worn by nominee Bryce Dallas Howard. Here, Howard gives a master class in color, showing that several hues in the same family worn together, like the various shades of red in her lipstick, necklace, dress (and even her hair color), can be as flattering as they are fashion-forward.

Elegant
restraint seemed to be the sartorial theme of the night, and all the better for the bold accessory moments that took the place of over-the-top gowns. Sarah Paulson, who took home an award for her role in “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” got the simple-dress-paired-with-breathtaking-jewelry memo. Like fellow winner Davis, Paulson sported maximalist diamond earrings from Nirav Modi, along with a bracelet (not pictured). Modi was somewhat of an award- show lucky charm on Sunday; we’d recommend the brand to Oscar hopefuls come the end of February.

Veteran actress Kirsten Dunst is one of the best-dressed starlets of her generation. She recently made headlines for recycling a Christian Lacroix dress that she had first worn to an Oscar party in 2004 (and looking just as chic in it today). On Sunday night, she was bedecked in Fred Leighton, specifically, in what appeared to be the same diamond riviere necklaces Nicole Kidman sported at the Golden Globe Awards. Dunst, however, paired the necklaces with another Leighton treasure: a 42-carat antique diamond fringe necklace. When it comes to Leighton, more is simply more.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis would have been proud of Natalie Portman’s retro-feeling, cream-colored Dior Dress and Tiffany & Co. diamond and platinum fan-shaped earrings that the actress wore to the SAG Awards. Portman was nominated for her portrayal of the former first lady in the film “Jackie.” With her hair pulled back, the earrings were on full display. Portman also wore a platinum and diamond bracelet and platinum and yellow sapphire ring, also by Tiffany.

Meryl Streep was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Streep lost out to Emma Stone (“La La Land”), but at least she got to enjoy these Fred Leighton antique old mine-cut diamond tiered leaf pendant earrings for the night. She also sported an old European-cut diamond and platinum ring (not pictured).

Netflix series “Stranger Things” delivers nostalgia in spades, and so does seeing its star Winona Ryder on the red carpet. Ryder won a SAG award with the rest of the “Stranger Things” cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. She also layered these necklaces to perfection, in a way that felt authentic to her personal style because they were. Ryder styled herself for the occasion, wearing her own dress and all of her own jewelry, an extremely rare occurrence on today’s red carpets. Ryder’s heart-shaped gold, diamond and sapphire pendant strung on a black ribbon is the epitome of chic. Why Ryder would ever utilize a stylist’s services remains a mystery.

Speaking of mysteries, we’re dying to know the maker of this pendant that Gretchen Mol wore with her J. Mendel gown. The bold gold medallion is an unexpected pairing with the dress’s complicated neckline, but it’s a risk that paid off. In a sea of diamonds collars, this bohemian look provides a welcome respite for the eyes. And after all, standing out at an award show is half the battle.
