Jaeger Reverso sells for more than $250K
A limited-edition Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2 garnered $255,750 at Antiquorum’s auction held Wednesday in New York, just above its pre-sale high estimate.
The reversible pink gold watch is No. 4 out of 75. It has a visible Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 174 movement with an inclined two-cage multi-axis spherical tourbillon. The pre-sale high estimate of this timepiece was $240,000.
Antiquorum's auction, which included 459 timepieces, totaled $3.6 million.
The expected top lot, a platinum skeletonized Audemars Piguet Ref. 26270 t chronograph with a visible one-minute repeater tourbillon regulator and 30-minute register, did not sell. The watch was expected to garner as much as $350,000.
Modern limited-edition timepieces were the standouts of the sale.
A Greubel Forsey “Double Tourbillon 30° Vision” No. 58 sold for $219,750 and was the second highest-grossing lot of the sale.
A Hublot Ref. MP-02 Flying Tourbillon titanium PVD-coated watch sold for $147,750 while an Audemars Piguet Ref. CCW1 Carbon Royal Oak Concept 2 brought in $141,750.
Antiquorum said that complicated timepieces from IWC continue to do well.
This particular auction included the sale of two IWC Il Destriero Scafusia watches, one in pink gold and the other in platinum. The pink gold watch sold for $123,750, under its pre-sale high estimate of $150,000, while the platinum model garnered $153,750, at the low end of its expected range of $150,000 to $250,000. The platinum Il Destriero Scafusia was the third highest-grossing lot of the sale.
While modern watches ruled the day Wednesday, Antiquorum noted that watches with important provenance continue to generate interest at auction.
A Swiss lady’s gold pocket watch retailed by Aubert & Klaftenberger, a gift from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to their daughter, HRH Princess Alice (1843 to 1878) for her 12th birthday in 1855, elicited “tremendous interest” from collectors, Antiquorum said.
The pocket watch sold for $26,250.
