5 jewels that once belonged to Lauren Bacall
When Bonhams New York auctions 700 pieces from the estate of the late Lauren Bacall this spring, it will include more than 30 of her favorite jewels from top brands like Cartier, Chanel and Tiffany & Co.
Born Betty Joan Perske in 1924 in New York, Bacall was only 19 when she made her on-screen debut in To Have and Have Not with Humphrey Bogart, with whom she would also be cast in Key Largo, The Big Sleep and Dark Passage.
The couple married in 1945, and had two children together. They remained married until Bogart’s death in 1957. She later had a third child with her second husband, Jason Robards.
Bacall, who starred in more than 30 films, died in August at the age of 89.
The jewelry in the Bonhams sale features a selection of more than 30 items, including several pieces by legendary designer Jean Schlumberger as well those that Bacall wore when she won an Academy Award for her lifetime contribution to film in 2009.
Highlights of the sale include an 18-karat yellow gold and blue enamel bracelet by Schlumberger, estimated to sell for $20,000 to $30,000; an 18-karat yellow gold, diamond, amethyst and turquoise ring also by Schlumberger that’s expected to garner as much as $12,000; and two 18-karat yellow gold rope-work bracelets, which Bonhams said Bacall frequently wore together on the same wrist.
In addition to the jewelry, the Bacall Collection also will include sculptures, contemporary prints, modern and contemporary art, English and French 18th- and 19th-century furniture, and luggage. The 700-piece collection is estimated to sell for up to $3 million.
Bonhams New York’s Bacall auction is scheduled for March 31 and April 1. Highlights of the collection will be on display in the months leading up to the auction in Miami, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and Los Angeles.
