This four-row coral necklace was the top lot at the recent “Fine Jewellery, Silver, Watches and Luxury Accessories” auction at Dreweatts in London.
London—The jewelry in the recent two-day auction from the collection of the late Victoria, Lady de Rothschild, proved to be popular, with 100 percent of those lots selling.

Victoria, Lady de Rothschild, was born in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1949 as Victoria Lou Schott.

She was born into wealth—her father, Lewis M. Schott, was a lawyer and a businessman, and her mother, Marcia Lou Whitney, was a descendant of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She married British financier Evelyn de Rothschild, a member of the famed Rothschild family, in 1973, and they had three children.

Victoria was known for being a style icon, philanthropist, patron of the arts, and an avid collector, particularly of art and design pieces by 20th- and 21st-century designers, amassing an exceptional private collection of artworks, iconic design pieces, silver, tableware, furniture, and jewelry.

She died Jan. 18, 2021, at 71.

Auction house Dreweatts called her style simple and clean, noting many of her jewels were statement beads made by modern designers and craftsmen.

In fact, the auction’s top lot was the four-row coral bead necklace seen at top of page, which went for £35,000 including the buyer’s premium (or approximately $45,844), smashing its pre-sale estimate of between £800 and £1,200.

Falling at No. 2 in the sale was the 3.17-carat pear-shaped diamond ring in platinum pictured above, which sold for £21,250 (or about $27,834), compared with a pre-sale estimate of £10,000-£15,000.

One lot comprising two other coral necklaces went for £18,750 (or $24,558), against a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500.

Also selling for £18,750 was a 1930s French link bracelet featuring oval brilliant-cut diamond-set links and step-cut emerald-set connectors.

Another highlight was a circa 1930 Art Deco ring (pictured above) featuring a 13.37-carat step-cut sapphire, 0.30 carats of diamond accents, and platinum, which sold for £17,500 (or $22,921), compared with a pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

There was also a circa 1870 mid-Victorian diamond crescent brooch (pictured below) that sold for more than four times its pre-sale estimate when it garnered £15,000 (or $19,645) on Wednesday.

A 19th century diamond Maltese cross brooch, meanwhile, went for more than three times its pre-sale estimate to sell for £10,625 (or $13,915).

A Modernist necklace by one of Time Magazine’s most influential designers in 2007, Algerian designer Taher Chemirk, featuring a diamond-set azurite crystal, plus carnelian and banded agate circular panels, sold for £1,375 (or about $1,801).

There were also several silver and tableware pieces from a range of designers, antique to contemporary.

Among them was a pair of Late George III silver gilt twin-handled cups by Paul Storr (1770-1844), considered the greatest English goldsmith and silversmith of the 19th century. The pair of cups, dated 1817, sold for £32,000 ($41,907), compared with a pre-sale estimate of £6,000-£8,000.
