Watch That Went to Outer Space Offered at Auction
The Omega Speedmaster is one of two notable timepieces being sold at RR Auction.
Boston—RR Auction has two notable timepieces on its agenda.
The Boston-based auction house, which specializes in items of historical significance, will offer a watch that’s been to outer space in its Space and Aviation auction, beginning April 11 and concluding April 18.
Cosmonaut Nikolai Budarin used the timepiece—an Omega Speedmaster Professional X-33 analog-digital watch—on the International Space Station during Expedition 6, between Nov. 25, 2002 and May 4, 2003.
Budarin flew to the station aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-113 and returned via the Soyuz TMA-1.
The watch features a 41 mm titanium case and black leather bracelet. It’s in good to fine condition, according to the auction house, with light scratches to the face and bezel.
It’s accompanied by a handwritten letter from Budarin, guaranteeing the watch’s authenticity.
RR Auction estimates that the timepiece will sell for at least $20,000.
The auctioneer is also currently offering in an online sale a pocket watch that belonged to Andy Warhol.
Warhol was an avid watch collector who is believed to have owned over 300 luxury timepieces.
The 14-karat white gold Elgin Crusader pocket watch for sale at RR Auction is 1.75 inches in diameter, with a back that opens to an engraved filigree design. It has a white gold face with gold Arabic numerals and hands, plus an inset seconds dial.
It was originally offered at auction at Sotheby’s in 1988 as part of “The Andy Warhol Collection” sale. The timepiece is accompanied by the original Sotheby’s catalog and a letter of provenance.
The pocket watch is estimated to sell for at least $10,000. Bidding closes on April 10 at 7 p.m. EST.
