Antwerp--The Antwerp World Diamond Centre issued a warning to members to be on the lookout for fraudulent Kimberley Process certificates from Sierra Leone after one surfaced in the Far East.
According to the alert circulated by the AWDC, a shipment of rough diamonds recently arrived in Hong Kong from Sierra Leone and was declared to the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department.
Upon inspection, customs authorities discovered the KP certificates were fake, a fact confirmed by the KP authority in Sierra Leone.
The AWDC said that the case since has been referred to the Hong Kong customs department for further investigation.
The KP also is calling on its members to be vigilant and has uploaded a photo of the fake certificate to the restricted portion of the KP website for members to view.
