Roberto Coin’s Big Gold ‘70s-Inspired Riff
The always prolific Italian designer rolled out his usual slew of new collections at Baselworld, some with a ‘70s theme inspired by his time working in the hotel business in the Channel Islands.
Basel--Roberto Coin rolled out his usual slew of new collections at Baselworld, some with a ‘70s theme inspired by his time working in the hotel business in the U.K.
“It was another world,” Coin said of the bygone, decadent decade in which he was running The Duke of Richmond Hotel on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. “People wanted freedom--freedom in life, freedom in love, freedom from politics, freedom from everything.”
But his new pieces weren’t designed to mirror those he saw on the necks, wrists and ears of the many celebrities who passed through his hotel or on the dancefloor of the local discotheque.
As Coin explained, “Whenever you bring back something you bring it back in another manner. Otherwise, it becomes an antique before it was born. You do an interpretation, a modern interpretation of the ‘70s.”
