It was a big week for retail news: A jeweler in Mississippi talked about an event that moved $57,000 in inventory while Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba announced it would be selling its first U.S.-based e-commerce site.

On the appointment side of things, Borsheims promoted three women and Scott Kay put Kelly Kahn in the position of director of brand management.

Meanwhile, in the gemstone world, wholesaler Veerasak Gems purchased a matching pair of 45-carat rubies from Gemfields, and an imperial topaz and diamond brooch soared past pre-sale estimates at Bonhams New York sale.
