As "going green" sweeps the globe, it is no surprise that the eco-friendly vibe is creeping its way into the jewelry industry.
"Green" jewelry is popping up all over the place. Designers are starting to use recycled materials and lab-grown gemstones to produce jewelry that is not only beautiful but good for the environment. But will these pieces sell?
With businesses such as greenKarat, Moonrise Jewelry, Brilliant Earth, Leber Jeweler, Lucina, Sumiche Jewelry and Verde popping up with eco-friendly and fair-trade collections, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the future of jewelry.
Going green is more than just a passing trend, it's a lifestyle—one that will be continued by future generations. I know I will insist on lab-grown diamonds and recycled metal for my engagement ring, and I'm not the only one.
Celebrities from Salma Hayek to Jay Leno have already jumped on the green wagon, and Leonardo DiCaprio's Blood Diamond movie has already brought conflict diamonds into the public eye.
In addition, eco-friendly clothing is already moving toward the mainstream and was seen at the Spring 2008 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City.
It won't be long before people will start demanding eco-friendly jewelry collections. So step on the bandwagon and put some green collections in your own shop.
