The career of jewelry designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal, better known by the initials JAR, has spanned decades and resulted in the creation of thousands of pieces of jewelry donned by women worldwide.

The career of jewelry designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal, better known by the initials JAR, has spanned decades and resulted in the creation of thousands of pieces of jewelry donned by women worldwide.
However, no matter how long or storied one’s career is, there’s always room for another first, and the Paris-based designed experienced two this week.
On Wednesday, more than 400 JAR pieces went on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It is the first U.S. retrospective of JAR pieces and the first retrospective at the Met dedicated to a contemporary jewelry designer.

Jewels by JAR is the first U.S. retrospective of the designer’s work. Rosenthal grew up in the Bronx but left the U.S. after graduating from Harvard University in 1966, moving to Paris. It was there that he met the other half of JAR, Pierre Jeannet. The two had a needlepoint shop for a year, after which Rosenthal moved back to New York to work at Bulgari.
The designer returned to Paris and opened JAR in 1978, running it with Jeannet. Of Rosenthal, Jeannet said, “At every step of the making of a piece, he checks and corrects. And if at the end his eye is not happy, we destroy the piece. But the piece, finished, is not yet at home; his last look is to see that the jewel has gone to the right lady. Then he sighs, his work is done.”
Rosenthal once said, speaking of JAR, that “we are not afraid of any materials,” and has worked in everything from aluminum to platinum. This “Chestnut and Acorn” necklace is wood and gold.
Two more of the many pieces on display include this diamond, silver and platinum bracelet (left), created in 2010 and now part of a private collection, and these multi-colored “Handkerchief” earrings, created using sapphires, demantoid and other garnets, zircon, tourmaline, emeralds, rubies, fire opals, spinels, beryls, diamonds, platinum, silver and gold.
Florida retailer Marissa Collections hosted a fashion show at the 10th annual “Hats in the Garden” fundraiser, held in Naples to raise money for the Naples Botanical Garden. The event took place Nov. 12. Marissa Collections carries both fine jewelry and high fashion, and put designers including Oscar de la Renta, L’Wren and Marchesa on the runway for the fundraiser.
The theme of Hats in the Garden this year was “Elegance in Bloom.” Joining Marissa Collections at the fundraiser and at the store for the two days following was jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth, whose pieces are shown here.
Borsheims opened the doors of its second store last Friday, located in the Nebraska Crossing Outlets in Gretna. The opening of the store coincided with the grand opening of the outlet mall itself, and mall officials organized dozens of giveaway to celebrate, including a pendant of black and white diamonds from the jewelry retailer priced at more than $1,600.
Borsheims said people were waiting at the doors when the store opened its doors at 10 a.m., and it expects the new boutique to be busy throughout the holiday season. Borsheims’ first and flagship store is located in Omaha, Neb.
